Experts estimate that approximately 80% to 90% of all disease may be stress-related! Regular massage and bodywork help us combat that frightening number by allowing us to relax. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage also reduces stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, alleviates pain, improves recovery from injury, helps you to sleep better, improves depressive moods, improves immune function and can increase your mental alertness. These incredible benefits of massage are especially favorable if massage is continued on a regular basis. A one-hour massage once or twice a month should be included in a preventative health maintenance regime.
In the East, massage techniques have always been a cornerstone of oriental medicine. At Jacksonville Acupuncture Wellness, PA, we also recognize the value of massage therapy. Therefore, at least 10-15 minutes of massage therapy is administered to most patients during their acupuncture treatment. This is particularly helpful if the patient presents with a musculoskeletal condition – acupuncture coupled with massage therapy can achieve better results than either modality on its own.
For patients who wish to extend their relaxation time, a one-hour massage can also be scheduled with a therapist at Jacksonville Acupuncture Wellness, PA.
Types of Massage Offered
Swedish Massage – This type of massage is synonymous with “relaxation” massage. It is the perfect way to unwind from life’s stressful events. The whole body is massaged and the client may request light or firm pressure. Aromatherapy may also be included in order to enhance the client’s pleasurable experience.
Deep Tissue Massage – This type of massage uses deeper pressure and focuses on breaking up adhesions found by the therapist within the muscles.
Neuromuscular Therapy – This is a type of manual therapy that assesses and treats soft tissue injuries and pain. Specific techniques are used to treat the attachment sites of the muscles as well as the bellies of the muscles. Trigger points, tender spots that often refer pain to other parts of the body, are also addressed during Neuromuscular Therapy. Neuromuscular Therapy is a type of Medical Massage.
Myofascial Release – This is also a type of manual therapy that treats the impaired function of the musculoskeletal system by slowly stretching contracted muscles and soft tissues thereby improving the body’s overall structure. Benefits include better posture, increased range of motion within the joints and less pain. Myofascial Release is also a form of Medical Massage.
Pregnancy Massage – A woman’s body goes through many changes during pregnancy. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can help manage these changes by reducing anxiety, decreasing symptoms of depression, relieving muscle aches and joint pains, and can even improve labor outcomes and newborn health.
